The State Fair of Texas opened its gates for the first time on October 26, 1886.  Today the gates swing open at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 27 for the 2019 State Fair of Texas and have a twenty-four-day run until October 20, 2019.

Whether you go every year or have never gone, let me give you FIVE reasons why you should go on opening day.

It is Opening Day.  It is like opening day for the Texas Rangers there is pomp and circumstance and it feels all new again.  Even better, on opening day you can get a State Fair of Texas OPENING DAY pin.  They are fun to get and wear as a memory of being at the opening day

The Marine Corp Band – Be an American and forget the crap in DC.  Returning for the 56th year, the United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps will perform at the State Fair of Texas on 10 different days. Beginning September 27, they will perform every day except Wednesday, with their final performance on Sunday, October 6.  See them tomorrow at 4:00 PM in the Marine Corp Square, 7:00 PM in the opening ceremony or at 7:15 in the Starlight Parade.

Big Tex Choice Awards food– nowhere else on Earth can you get the unique foods from the Big Tex Choice Awards Competition.  This year’s winners will take your taste buds where no man has gone before.  Read about them here and try my favorite, the Ruth’s Fried Stuffed Taco Cone.

Fletchers Corny Dog  & a cold Shiner Beer – Whether you are a native Texas (like me and Jennifer Livingstone) or you got here as fast as you could (like Tina Tannery and Jill Platt) nothing is better for your memories than getting a Fletcher’s Corny Dog and a cold Shiner Beer from the stand by Big Tex.  Then add some mustard to your corny dog and smile for the picture in front of Big Tex.  It is a Christmas Card in the making.

Music at The State Fair – over the 24 days that the State Fair of Texas is held they have musical performances all day long.  Kicking off the opening day on the Chevrolet Main State tonight is none other than Rick Springfield.  A back to past of the 1980s where I am sure we will here the 1981 #1 hit and Grammy Award song Jesse’s Girl.

Whether you make it out today, or later in the next 24 days, enjoy yourself and make sure you get a picture of you and your family with BIG TEX.

Off to see the fair later today,
