Which Way Are You Going?

“Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

Alice: I don’t much care where.

The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn’t much matter which way you go.

Alice: …So long as I get somewhere.

― Lewis CarrollAlice in Wonderland

Each transition from one year to the next creates an opportunity for growth. I adopted an annual ritual from Lori Darley and it makes a difference in my life.

It is a simple straightforward way to create a year of intentions.

Three steps towards creating your 2018.

STEP 1 – Toss out the “New Year’s Resolution” approach. Lots of quick goals and no action.

STEP 2 – You have to write it down first. Take the time today and write yourself a letter dated December 31, 2018. Think back to the first day of school and in one of our classes the teacher would have you write a “What I did this summer” essay.

That is what I want you to do. I want you to write a “What I DID in 2018”.

That’s right – think it, plan it, before you make it happen.

Write it as if TODAY is December 31, 2018, and you are stating to yourself and anyone you want to share it with, what you accomplished in 2018. It is a powerful expression of your future and your intentions for the year. If you believe it then you can make it happen.

STEP 3 – Be bold and read it out loud to your spouse, your children or your employees. If you are the CEO, Team Leader, and want everyone to be on your team, then you need to open the intellectual vault and get the team onboard.

Of course, it takes action to back up your story…..find a mentor or be a mentor and change your life. We challenge you to think outside the norm and make 2018 incredible.

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.… Bob Moawad

Creating my future,
Michael

    A Midsummer Night’s Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare between 1590 and 1597. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world.

What is our Midsummer Night’s Dream or is it a this a ongoing Nightmare?

Taken today that same play might be considered Europe or the United States.

    Is Retirement Still a Reality?

Is retirement still a reality? Yes, but it’s a shifting and evolving reality.

    “Retirement” Is Outmoded:

Traditional notions of “retirement” are outmoded. In particular, the expectation that people should want (or be forced) to stop working at age 65 no longer makes sense in a world in which people live longer, live healthier as they age, and the ratio of old to young is considerable and growing.

Yet as longevity has increased over the past century, we’ve tacitly tacked all the added years on at the end. Apart from the undesirability of making “old age” the longest phase of one’s life, it’s unrealistic to expect that most workers will be able save enough over the course of a 40-year working life to fund a possible 30-year (or longer) retirement.

There should be no hard boundary on where work ends and retirement begins. Instead, we need to think in terms of a new “life script” that allows for greater flexibility, time off or part time work mid-career, more opportunities for education and retraining across our life course, and “phased retirement” in which people reduce their hours, shift into less demanding roles, and so on, but not abruptly leave the workforce at some pre-set (and arbitrary) age.
