What Your Monopoly Strategy Says About Your Money Strategy

Hey, Bella here.

Confession: I will never say no to a game of Monopoly.

I know it drives my friends and family crazy, but I can’t help it. I find it endlessly fascinating. Because every time I play, I see people’s financial personalities come out in full color.

The cautious saver. The risk-taker. The negotiator. It’s a board game, sure, but it also says a lot about the way we approach money in real life.

The funny thing is, Monopoly isn’t really a “luck” game like a lot of the other games we grew up playing. It’s about strategy and choices.

Do you take the risk now or play it safe?

Do you build quickly or wait to strike?

Do you focus on one big bet or spread your chances around the board?

Those same instincts show up when we deal with money outside the game. And sometimes, the habits that make us “good” at Monopoly don’t actually help us win in real life.

The Cash Hoarder

Gameplay: Won’t buy a property until they’ve circled the board twice. Clings to cash like it’s oxygen.
Real life: Plays it “safe” by leaving money in the bank, avoiding investing, and waiting for the “perfect” time that never comes.
Takeaway: Safety is good. But in real life, sitting on too much cash just means losing ground to inflation. Wealth builds when you balance safety with putting your money to work.

The Big Spender

Gameplay: Buys every property they land on, maxes out hotels ASAP.
Real life: Loves lifestyle upgrades and big swings, but risks overextending.
Takeaway: Aggressive growth can work, but not without structure. In money (and Monopoly), you need reserves. Otherwise, one unlucky roll or one market dip knocks you out of the game.

The Boardwalk Dreamer

Gameplay: Ignores steady properties while chasing Park Place and Boardwalk.
Real life: Chases “lottery ticket” investments: risky ventures, crypto fads, or that one “sure thing.”
Takeaway: Big wins are exciting, but reliable cash flow is what keeps you in the game. A few small, steady plays often beat the one giant gamble.

The Railroads & Utilities Investor

Gameplay: Snaps up every railroad and utility on the board. Predictable, steady, and dependable.
Real life: Loves consistency, compounding, and playing the long game.
Takeaway: This is a common strategy in both Monopoly and wealth management. In the game, four railroads are basically an ATM. In real life, steady investments are what give you the freedom to take bigger opportunities later.

The Negotiator

Gameplay: Trades smart, builds alliances, and plays three moves ahead.
Real life: Understands leverage, builds teams, and uses advisors wisely.
Takeaway: Some of the most successful people aren’t the ones who rolled the best; they’re the ones who strategized best. In life, wealth isn’t just about what you own; it’s about how you position yourself.

So, What’s Your Strategy?

At the end of the day, Monopoly is just a game. But the way you approach it reveals a lot about how you think about money. Do you hoard until opportunities pass you by? Gamble everything on the “big one”? Spend faster than you save? Or do you balance risk, cash flow, and strategy?

The people who win on the board and in real life are the ones who adapt. They know when to play it safe, when to take a risk, and when to make the trade that changes everything.

Your Turn

Your Monopoly strategy might just be telling you something about your financial strategy.

If you’re curious what your style says about your money, or if you’re ready to build a plan that helps you win the long game, let’s talk.

Schedule a Meeting

My strategy? I tend to go for the yellow and green properties. They’re a little flashy, but they’re consistent earners — steady, reliable, and hard to beat over the long haul. That’s also how I approach money. At 22, I’m looking for early consistency that will pay off later.

It’s the same mindset behind the HENRY program we’re building, helping High Earners, who are Not Rich Yet, set a foundation now that creates real freedom later.

It’s unlikely I’ll be able to convince Dylan or my friends to play Monopoly with me this weekend, so get nostalgic and play a game for me, and let me know what your strategy says about you.

All the best,

Bella
